Trauma Informed Yoga Session

Applied Polyvagal in Therapeutic Yoga

Trauma-Informed Yoga is an approach to yoga practice that recognizes and responds to the impact of trauma on individuals and communities. The practice creates a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment, ensuring that physical, mental, and emotional well-being is prioritized at every step.

Movement as Medicine

Trauma can leave the body stuck in paralysis or prone to abrupt bursts of rage, limiting the healthy expression of energy needed to navigate life fully. As Peter A. Levine writes in Healing Trauma: A Pioneering Program for Restoring the Wisdom of Your Body:

“When people have been traumatized, they are stuck in paralysis—the immobility reaction or abrupt explosions of rage. Because of this, they lack the healthy aggression that they need to carry out their lives effectively.”

Through gentle, intentional movement, Trauma-Informed Yoga supports the nervous system in releasing stored tension, cultivating regulation, and restoring a sense of agency and vitality. Participants are guided to reconnect with their body, emotions, and inner resources in a safe and empowering way.

Beneath the surface of what is experienced as shattered, traumatized, wounded and broken, lies our whole-untouched-authentic self  held within the security of protectors and in wait for connection. Once the protectors trust that it is safe to ease and unwind, our whole-untouched-authentic self will spontaneously emerge, engaging parts of us that needs healing. - Megha Venketasamy

I am a trained Hatha Yoga Teacher and hold a Certificate in Applied Polyvagal Theory in Therapeutic Yoga. My own experiences of unmet trauma, wounds, and pain guided me to this path. Through this journey, I have been learning to communicate with my body and nervous system, cultivating resilience and presence from within.

The foundation of my classes is simple:

“We show up in loving-kindness and practice in utter compassion for ourselves.”

Through trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive practices, we learn to be present to the movements in our body — rather than labeling them as anxiety, emotions, or stories from the past. Repeated practice strengthens our embodiment and ability to hold ourselves, helping to release frozen energy that drains our vitality.

In these sessions, we intentionally create new, healing memories for the nervous system. We become present to our nervous system states and learn to hone our movements from this awareness.

Unlike conventional yoga sessions, trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive yoga is invitation-based, with modifications offered throughout. The focus is on:

  • Easing chronic tension in the body

  • Moving beyond limiting narratives

  • Consciously strengthening our connection to the nervous system

  • Recognizing and befriending different nervous system states with loving-kindness

This practice is an embodied journey of resilience, presence, and self-compassion, supporting each participant to reconnect with their body, their energy, and their innate capacity to heal.
